A highlight of 5th grade is the outdoor fall  field trip to Buckley Homestead in Lowell, Indiana, that makes local history come alive! The one-room schoolhouse is a student favorite. The springtime trip to Fair Oaks Farm is also a much-anticipated adventure.

Bible: We see how God cares for His people by studying the prophecies of the Old Testament and their fulfillment in the New Testament through Christ. We learn the names of the 12 disciples by singing a song and including ourselves as also being called by Christ to serve.

Language Arts: Playing the Mystery Bag game is fun and helps the students use describing words (adjectives). Various writing prompts help the students demonstrate their creativity in writing and each student gets to write their very own book. We learn to use interesting words in our study of grammar. Online games help the students practice their skills. We also study The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis as a class. Students learn to study and discuss the work of Christian authors.

Spelling: The students review phonic skills and word meaning as they learn new words. They love to play Sparkle in preparation for their weekly test.

Reading: Our reading selections often are excerpts from books. If students enjoyed the story, they can find the whole book in our library. It’s interesting to try and use our new vocabulary words during the week.

Math: Our God is a God of order. We can see the orderliness in math patterns and operations. Our math text is online and presents very engaging lessons to help students visualize the concepts.

Science: Fifth-graders participate in many labs and demonstrations to prove science concepts. Their big project in the fall is to grow Wisconsin FastPlants from seed to harvest. This textbook is also online and available for review at home. How convenient!

Social Studies: We review  basic geography skills and then study the history of the United States, from explorers to immigrants. Students are introduced to some very colorful characters such as Magellan, Blackbeard, and Drake.
