CHOIR

When students enter Junior High, they have the opportunity to join Choir at Lansing Christian School.  I hope that you will take this opportunity for your child to learn how to sing correctly, to increase their music reading skills, and to sing wonderful songs of praise to our God!

Choir meets every Wednesday and Thursday during study hall, and all students are welcome, regardless of their current singing ability.  I encourage every student to be in choir!

Choir is part of a well-rounded Christian education here at Lansing Christian School, and as such we sing mostly sacred music which has educational value.  We also present a "Kids Concert" in May, which includes secular, lighter music.

General Music Classes

At the Junior High level, students have Music class once a week for one semester. Your Junior High student will receive a letter grade on their report card for Music.  This grade is based on his or her academic work, and also his or her participation, attitude and behavior in class.

In 7th grade, our Music class first focuses on a Christian's perspective on music and how to discern excellence in music.  After that unit, we move on to study the elements of music:  rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tempo, dynamics and tone color.  We use a drum circle to reinforce and apply our learning, especially as we study rhythm.

In 8th grade, we briefly study music history from about 1600 to 1900, with the goal of exposing students to music composed before their lifetime, and also the goal of having them appreciate this music as it reflects God's attributes.  We take a quick trip through the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods of music history.
