Music at the Junior High level at Lansing Christian School includes a higher level of learning and responsibility than in earlier grades, just like all other classes at the Junior High level. In seventh grade, we examine how Christians look at music differently than non-Christians, and then we study the elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, form, dynamics, tempo and tone color. The eighth graders take a brief survey of music history, including the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. Every Junior High student at Lansing Christian will have General Music for one semester, one day per week.
In all General Music classes, we sing Christian devotional songs at the beginning of the period, and then address our music academic work. We do have occasional assignments in General Music, and several quizzes. Students earn a letter grade based on their academic work and their behavior, attitude and participation in class. In our classes, we do everything from singing, to playing bells and drums, to listening to musical examples, to watching movies, to creating melodies, and more.
In Choir, we do lots of singing! We learn how to sing correctly, and focus on Christian repertoire in which the words are directly God glorifying. We present three concerts per year at Lansing Christian, plus we go caroling out in the community around the Christmas season. Every other year, we also participate in the Junior High Choral Festival at Illiana Christian High School. |
